Imagine wild dolphins up so close that you could reach out and touch them. Be prepared to be wowed on this tour, as dolphin play within arms reach along the bow wave and surf in the stern wake of the Adventure R.I.B. We often encounter herds of Common Dolphin numbering in the hundreds and even the thousands (mega-herds), often within a few miles offshore of San Diego.

All year long we see friendly Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), the extremely gregarious and inquisitive Long-beaked Common Dolphins (Delphinus capensis) that often surround the boat to play, their close relatives and equally playful Short-beaked Common Dolphins (Delphinus delphis), and the always frolicking Pacific White-sided Dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obliquidens).

This year we have also seen the return of the mysterious Risso's Dolphins (Grampus griesus) that have taken up residence just offshore. These very graceful dolphins, considered to be small whales by many experts, are typically a more tropical pelagic species and so it is unusual to find them at this latitude. This year, we have encountered mega-herds of Risso’s dolphins numbering well over a thousand.

Your captain will act as an onboard guide and naturalist, sharing a wealth of knowledge about the different species of dolphin, their behavior and feeding habits and what makes the coastal waters off of San Diego a desired destination for them.
