Our Whale and dolphin watching excursions are a great way to spend a memorable and exciting day with friends and family. Our captains are experienced naturalists that give background information on the wildlife you will be watching and all are experienced US Coast Guard licensed to keep both you and the majestic animals in the water safe and sound.

Leaving from the beautiful Sheraton Marina Hotel allows you a chance to view the downtown skyline as well as many other sites San Diego Bay has to offer. As we make our way past the Navy Submarine Base and the Point Loma Lighthouse and then onto our ocean excursion, we will get up close to the action as we see breaching whales and dolphins leap into the air for an adventure of a lifetime!

San Diego is well known for its Gray Whale watching as these magnificent animals pass by San Diego on their annual migration to the warmer waters of the Baja Peninsula, Mexico and then again on their return North to their summer feeding grounds. Soon after the Gray Whales head North, we typically begin seeing the largest animal ever known to have lived on Earth, the Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus), beginning late spring.

YEAR ROUND WHALE SIGHTINGS:

May – December:

Blue Whales, Fin Whales Humpback Whales and Minke Whales
January – April:

Gray Whales, Fin Whales, and Humpback Whales

For dolphin lovers, we encounter large herds of dolphin at times numbering in the hundreds throughout the year. Pacific White-sided and Bottlenose dolphin are frequently seen offshore, feeding on an abundance of bait fish. The extremely playful dolphins come right up to the R.I.B., and love to ride our bow wave and stern wake.
We also see the extremely gregarious and inquisitive Long-beaked Common Dolphins, along with their close relatives and equally playful Short-beaked Common Dolphins (Delphinus delphis). Risso’s Dolphins (Grampus griesus) are more seasonal and these very graceful dolphins, considered to be small whales by many experts, are typically a more tropical pelagic species.
